The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the governing body that sets the standard for all sunglasses. Because all sunglasses are considered a medical product, ANSI has several standards based on impact resistance, color and optical resolution. ANSI standards for sunglasses encompass Z80.3 and Z87.1+.
Sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which causes premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, sagging of the skin, brown and sunshine cataracts, and skin cancer. The amount of damage depends on your exposure, strength of the light, elevations and whether the skin is protected. You cannot see UV Radiation but you can feel the affects of it. The bluer the sky, the less UV is present than on a cloudy day.
Because we are dealing with a medical device there are rules to protect the eye from external debris and damage when wearing a sunglass. Your eyes are attached to your brain by the optic nerve, and are equally reactive. Your eyes process information for your entire body to move, react and respond. Your eyes can also affect your nervous system based on the information given to the brain. ANSI has set level of impact standards based on the tasks performed and the potential for injury.
